This hunt test painting, “Sam at the line” show a Labrador and handler on the line during a hunt test. This was as much a landscape as portrait. The ponds shown here are called “The Field of Dreams.” Many a hunt test and field trial dog fulfilled the promise of the name.
This is an acrylic painting with a looser style than what I usually do. Because acrylics dry so fast – they are water-based – you have to act quickly and sometimes that forces you to not get too detailed. Sometimes when I get too detailed on some paintings – it just doesn’t end up working. For this painting, I was able to concentrate more on color.
Here is the initial sketch I did of Sam before placing him on the board to paint.
Now, I thought at the end I had a perfect painting, but one thing it lacked that I forgot: my signature.
Sam and many of his Labs have gone to the Master Nationals. Here is more information about the Master National Retriever Club.
