I was asked to paint acrylic portrait of legendary retriever trainer Rex Carr for the Retriever Hall of Fame. I was asked to paint him in a familiar pose – that is arm resting on the lawn chair as he watched each dog work. Trouble was that the photo I had for reference had no Rex Carr hand in it. I had to use other photos to look at. The hand is actually mine, but I referred to the photos of his hands and changed it enough to make it look like Rex’s hands.
Rex is looked up to by more than one generation of retriever field trialers. I remember the “Rex Carr Specials” we made at Tri-Tronics – which were special remote trainers made specifically for his use. His use of those early e-collars helped in the development of safe and effective collars that “made it easier for dogs to learn.”
